Supporting Parents Throughout Their Child's Journey
The Ashbrow Parents Advocacy Network (APAN) recognises the many challenges parents face in supporting their children’s education and well-being. APAN offers a dedicated network of parent advocates who provide guidance and support across various areas.
- School Navigators: APAN advocates support families with children in infant, secondary schools, and colleges.
- Addressing Concerns: Advocates offer guidance on issues such as exclusion, teacher-parent-child relationships, discrimination, and curriculum queries.
- Empowering Parents: APAN acts as a bridge between families and the school system. Advocates ensure parents understand the school culture and empower them to effectively advocate for their children’s needs.
- Promoting Positive Communication: APAN’s approach fosters positive communication between families, schools, and the wider community, promoting a supportive learning environment for all.
- Recognising Faith: APAN acknowledges the importance of respecting individual faith and religious beliefs, understanding how these beliefs influence parenting methods and shape student values.
- Collaborative Partnerships: Advocates works collaboratively with organisations like the West Yorkshire Police Kirklees Division to address institutional racism and historical issues within the community. This fosters trust and promotes a more inclusive approach to public safety.
- Supporting Family Stability: APAN recognises the impact of external factors like the cost of living, social media, and societal pressures on families.
- Preventative Measures: APAN strives to equip parents with tools to navigate these challenges and mitigate potential risks such as substance use, gang affiliation, or mental health issues.
- Local Ward Concerns: Advocates for APAN include Ward Councillors representing Individuals and communities within Ashbrow. These advocates can support existing policy and influence policy changes with the support of council officers
- Holistic Approach: APAN acknowledges the importance of mental health alongside physical health. They recognise the challenges young people face and offer support in managing stress, anxiety, and overall wellbeing.
- Signposting and Support: Advocates can connect parents and adolescents with relevant organisations and clinicians for ongoing mental health support.
- Advocacy for SEN Students: APAN supports parents of children with special educational needs (SEN).
- Referral Assistance: APAN can assist with referrals for professional assessments and connect families with Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs) to ensure their child receives the appropriate support for learning and development.

Ashbrow is one of the most ethnically diverse wards in Kirklees where the White British population accounts for more than half the population.
According to population estimates, around 20,000 people live within Ashbrow Ward, making it the third-highest populated ward in Huddersfield after Greenhead and Dalton.
